Jay-Z needs ...hipsters? Funny marketing suggestions for the Brooklyn Nets.
Hipsters are such a unique demographic. My boy Jimmy said, “Real hipsters…the ones that wear skinny jeans and toms. Whole new world.” Time magazine described them back in July 2009 as –
"Hipsters are the friends who sneer when you cop to liking Coldplay. They're the people who wear t-shirts silk-screened with quotes from movies you've never heard of and the only ones in America who still think Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good beer. They sport cowboy hats and berets and think Kanye West stole their sunglasses. Everything about them is exactingly constructed to give off the vibe that they just don't care."
Time magazine will also further describe Hipsters are, thus, “"take your grandmother's sweater and Bob Dylan's Wayfarers, add jean shorts, Converse All-Stars and a can of Pabst and bam — hipster." This presents a unique marketing opportunity to the NBA’s soon to be Brooklyn Nets, as Brooklyn is just full of hipsters. Kurt Snibbe of ESPN Page 2 offers some marketing suggestions.
Music mogul Jay-Z, a part-owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, recently announced that the team will officially become the Brooklyn Nets when it moves to that borough of New York for the 2012-13 season.
In order to appeal to Brooklyn's largest demographic -- its thriving hipster community -- the team will need to develop a marketing campaign targeted to the borough's too-cool-for-everything citizens.
